An ancient Dwarven name for the river flowing through the heartlands of Branduin, for which the country is named. The Ad-Braddur’s tributaries draw the snowmelt and springs in the Iegrembar Mountains, and wind their way through Branduin’s rich farmland, down to Branduin’s capital of Chershills, where the river meets the Sea of Nar.
Chershills’ famous system of bridges criscrosses the river: many of these bridges are fitted with waterwheels to power numerous Gnomish devices throughout the city, including the Clock Tower of St. Arn.

Its language, Branduish, is the lingua franca of the Four Worlds. It shares its borders with two of the Uranian Elven tribes, the Red Elves and the Green Elves, both of whom regard the country with suspicion because it is destroying their forests. The country’s namesake is the river Ad-Brandur, whose branches flow to each part of the nation; its three major cities are Cherishills (its capital), Longstables, and Ninewines. Its heraldic symbol is a golden seven-pointed star on a field of black, usually associated with an eagle.
Regarded as the second most powerful of the Human nations (the first being Endora, Branduin’s rival), Branduin’s major source of political weight comes from a trade alliance with both the Dwarven city states and the Gnome-Lands. Branduin’s arrangement with the Gnomes permits Branduin exclusive access to various Gnomish inventions, including the mundane printing press, the steam engine, and, most recently, gunpowder. Examples of Gnomish engineering can be found all over the country, such as the water-powered Clock Tower of St. Arn adorning Cherishills.

The latter ability is regarded as wicked and duplicitous, and has earned the Nemnebliari a most untrustworthy reputation.
Related: Changelings § RacesA decree issued by the Merifianan high priest Lath roughly 2,100 years ago, stating that it is the duty of all Merifianans to spread their faith to people of all races.
The Commission of Lath was prompted by the Schismatic War in which the Merifianans and Nemnebliari parted ways. Legend holds that Lath was inspired by the example of the Merifianan priest Seplican, who attempted to convert Nemnebliari war prisoners back to the Merifianan faith. Determining that the best way to combat the Nemnebliari heresy was to convert the “heathen world” before the Nemnebliari could, Lath wrote seven copies of a letter. He sent these copies to the churches in seven different Merifianan cities, commissioning ships to be sent from each city to the outside world.
The ship from the city of Regulesse was prepared first, setting sail for the southwest and eventually making first contact with Humans at what is now the city of Heturica on the isle of Netheldy. The ships from five of the other cities were swift to follow the Regulesse ship, and would later explore the various Island States. The ship from the city of Lothlin, however, sailed west, soon making contact with Humans at Vivendora on the eastern coast of what would later be Endora.

Its thick jungles have proven the main obstacle to any who dare land on its shores: the trees harbor many dangers, both fabled and true.
“Eliptologists” often focus their studies on Crota, trying either to figure out how to penetrate it or to construe what accounts exist of it. Some claim that the jungles hide cities of gilded ziggurats; others, mountains studded with enormous masks of jade; others, still, claim that the canopy swarms with tribes of vicious toadmen; and still others relate wide-eyed tales of feathered serpents that breathe fire.

Related: Changelings § Miscellaneous § Religion & CultureThe “Third Planet” was discovered 700 years ago when the Tritonians, their Empire in decline, saw fit to find a new Planet to subjugate. Their fortune could not have been worse.
Originally, the Tritonian word draco meant “lizard.” The definition had to be revised when the Tritonians first laid eyes on the enormous reptilian inhabitants of Draconia. The warmest of the Four Planets, Draconia has no mammals: reptiles and birds dominate its balmy landscape, along with the Dragons and Ryu.
The Ryu are the bipedal cousins of the Dragons: often called “Draconians,” their civilization is split between worship of their ancestors (and the Dragons by extension) and worship of the Kami, or “fortunes.” Their priests (shugenja) derive a form of divine magic from these Kami, and denounce the old Dragons as a crippled, dying race whose time has passed.
The Dragons, meanwhile, remain in dwindling numbers. Many have been slain by the Ryu samurai over the centuries, but those that remain are revered like gods by Ryu peasants. Powerful and mysterious, they live on the isolated continent of Lungao, where they are often visited by young Ryu who wish to be trained as monks in their esoteric ways.
The Empire of Ryudenu, meanwhile, continues to perpetuate its ritual worship of the Kami, and sees no reason to expand its borders to the colder worlds of the “mammals” that have so recently made a tourist attraction of their planet. Beyond mere commerce with Endora and Tritonia, the Ryu keep their borders sealed, and fiercely guard the one and only arcus the Tritonians have built, regulating any traffic that comes through it.
One of the Uranian Human nations, located on the west coast of Herislolom. Durundaro’s heraldic symbol is a silver geranium on a green shield born by a horse; the shield is the emblem of the Chancellor, Durundaro’s ruler, while the horse is the emblem of the Chamber, a house of representatives elected by the populace. Durundaro was the first republican government on Urania, and other nations have since adopted variations of its political organization.
Named for the River Durun, Durundaro has endured a long and bloody parade of conflicts with the Ogres of Umbermoor, their neighbors to the south. All regions of Durundaro south of the River Dorn are designated as “the Ravaged Lands,” a buffer zone of fortresses and ramparts designed to protect the northern half of the nation from skirmishes with the enemy. Although the southern half of the country bears the scars of centuries of war, the northern half remains largely unspoiled by battle.
Assaulted by war from without, Durundaro also has been hardened by religious conflict from within. 1,100 years ago, when other Uranian Human nations adopted the Edict of Grigny, Durundaro resisted, opting to permit its ancient Druidic religion to flourish alongside its newly accepted Merifianan faith. The two religions quickly grew factious, campaigning against one another to win seats in the Chamber, each trying to stamp the other out through legislation. Conflict between the two religions grew so bitter that, 200 years ago, Chancellor Lishly issued the Amendment of Secularity, a law completely separating Durundaro’s church and state. According to this Amendment, all Merifianan churches and Druidic fanes were to be dismantled at once; public worship of any sort would be punishable by fines and imprisonment, and persons showing any religious affiliation whatsoever were not permitted to hold any political office.
In response to this extreme Amendment, a group of separatists in Durundaro’s now abolished Merifianan church banded together, and, as an act of protest, traveled north of Durundaro to the frozen valley of the Taiga, where they would establish the Human Nation of Tundrad. Meanwhile, members of both the Druidic and Merifianan faiths still worship in secret, in numerous chapels and fanes hidden in catacombs beneath Durundaro’s cities. Durundaro’s government remains secularized to this day, much to the continuing chagrin of other Uranian nations.

Each of their clans governs one of their city-states, which are scattered throughout the mountain ranges of Urania. The capitals of these states are connected to one another through the “Dwarven Road,” which also serves as the main land-based artery of commerce between the Human nations. Many Dwarves earn their living as guides on this system of roads. Thus, the Dwarves are an amicable and jolly lot, often mingling freely with Humans and Gnomes, particularly in the nation of Branduin.
Related: Branduin § Dwarves § Gnomes § RacesAn edict of the Merifianan church stating that each Human nation is permitted to create its own variation of Merifianan dogma, so long as certain “divine truths” are acknowledged by all. This edict also states that each Human nation must adopt the Merifianan faith as its official faith, abandoning all older religions in its favor.
The edict is named for a council of Human and Merifianan priests that convened in the city of Grigny (located on the western tip of the Island State of Mistisen) 1,100 years ago. The church of the Merifianan faith had outgrown its original bounds, and could no longer operate efficiently across three continents. Therefore, the council decided after much debate to separate the Merifianan church into smaller churches—one for each of the newly born Human nations—that all would defer to the authority of the “mother church” centered in the Merifianan capital of Rapturus.
However, the decision was more than purely administrative. Concern had grown that the Humans were incorporating far too many of their old Druidic beliefs into the dogma of the Merifianan church. Since each of the Human nations interpreted the nature of the Goddess differently, the edict was necessary both to accommodate changes in doctrine that the Humans were making (such as canonizing of “Saints”), while still maintaining the fundamentally “Merifianan” character of each church. Each Human nation adopted the edict except for Durundaro.

Eliptia’s only inhabitants so far seem to be the dark-skinned Daioissian Humans, and golden-complected Crotan Humans. Its continents include the Grand Crescent, Daio, the “Ruined Continent” of Rahavnita, and the “Dark Continent” of Crota, along with numerous archipelagos.
Daio seems to be the dominant power on Eliptia, though ruins of former civilizations fill the planet’s tangled jungles. Called the “Ring Star” at times, Eliptia even fascinates astronomers, who have spotted its thin set of rings circling its equator. Currently being colonized by the Silver Elves of Tritonia and by the Empire of Endora, Eliptia’s exotic goods—-everything from pearls to ivory, chocolate to cocoa, tobacco to cotton—-are sought throughout Urania.
However, emulating the behavior of its former master Tritonia, Endora has begun importing Daioissian Humans as slaves. Many historians predict that this exercise of empire will lead to the same ills that destroyed the power of Tritonia.

Through its long-standing alliance with Tritonia, Endora has gained remarkable eminence by assisting the Tritonians in the exploration and colonization of the Fourth Planet, Eliptia. The country is an absolute monarchy, its government very closely tied to its Church. Endora calls itself an “Empire” because of its colonial holdings on Eliptia, and is only too happy to declare itself the richest and most powerful nation on Urania—even more powerful, some say, than its Tritonian allies. Its financial resources are almost limitless because of its monopoly on exotic Eliptian imports.

Indigenous to the Gnome-Lands (located on the eastern shores of Tressendel), the Gnomes have risen to eminence through their alliance with the powerful Human nation of Branduin. The Gnome Lands are governed by a tricameral legislature consisting of a High Council, a Somewhat Higher Council, and a Very Important Even More Higher-ish Council, each elected through a complicated system of ballots.
The tallest Gnomes rarely exceed 3 feet, and their round noses and pointed ears often make for a comical appearance, especially when combined with their extravagant names. Indigenous to the Gnome Lands are Goblins, who are the Gnomes’ sworn enemies.

The salamander is the symbol of the Cavaldy family, a noble line that has governed the Island States for several decades.

The Merifianans are one of the two Changeling Races (the other Changeling Race is the Nemnebliari), and are gifted with the power to “transubstantiate” themselves into inanimate matter. This supernatural ability gave rise to their entire religious faith.
Their church and their state have never known separate lives. The major event of their history was the Schismatic War, an insurgence of heretics led by one of their own kind, named Turen; he and his followers were expelled from the country by King Samar, and now the descendants of those followers are the Nemnebliari race. After this War, the Merifianans would begin sending out missionaries to convert the Uranian Human tribes that would eventually become the modern-day Human nations.
Related: Changelings § Countries § Geography § History § Religion & CultureAlso known as the “Star-Mother” (hence “Stellamadra” in Endoran) or simply “the Goddess,” she is one of the two primary deities of the Merifianan faith. The Merifianans hold that their power to change shape originated from her during her creation of the world. The Goddess is traditionally depicted as a seraphic figure in blue robes, with three pairs of wings and a crown of stars; there are only a limited number of images of Moira in Merifiana itself, as many believe that to portray her image is too presumptuous for mortal artists.
As the Merifianan faith spread to the various Uranian Human nations the figure of Moira began to be treated differently. The Branduish and the Endorans, for instance, believe that to depict Moira shows reverence for her; the Durundarans and the Tundradeans, on the other hand very strictly do not depict Moira for they regard such as a form of blasphemy.
She represents specifically the “passive” Virtues: Faith, Hope, Wisdom, and Temperance. Also, in Merifianan mythology, She has leadership over the hosts of the Angels, and often dispatches them to do her bidding; this leads to another of her epithets, the “Queen of Heaven.”
Related: Changelings § Religion & CultureA country located to the south of Merifiana, home of the other Changeling Race, the Nemnebliari. The Nemnebliari, unlike the Merifianans, can “transfigure” into other living beings, a power that has earned them a very distrustful reputation. They gained this power through following a cult led by Turen, a priest-turned-heretic, who was driven out of Merifiana along with his followers by King Samar.
The Nemnebliari are governed by a monarchy, most of their rulers being queens who can claim lineage from their first ruler Queen Nemnes. They also have a church similar to that of the Merifianan faith, though with the notable addition of Turen as their first holy martyr.

After Turen’s death at the hands of the paladin Tacis, she assumed the throne of the newfound Changeling nation, seeking to craft it into an empire fit to rival that of her Merifianan enemies. She also guided Nemnebliar through the remainder of the Schismatic War, managing (through her careful selection of wise generals) to win the Nemnebliari the entire southern half of Forimlesse. In Merifianan scriptures, she is portrayed as a ruthless harlot; but to her Nemnebliari people, she is venerated as a clever and resourceful ruler. Their race and country are both named in her honor.

New characters were added as the missionaries encountered more languages; the alphabet now stands at 37 characters. As the alphabet encounters new languages, spelling in Netheldian letters has yet to be regularized, and still varies according to regional accent and dialect. It is now the primary alphabet used in the Altair Universe.

Netheldy is the northernmost of the Island States; it is a rocky island, but its frequent rains have made it fertile. This fertility attracted the Merifianan priests sent by the Commission of Lath here approximately 1,200 years ago, when their theocratic nation first began to send out missionaries to the “heathen world” beyond. Numerous monasteries still thrive on Netheldy’s hills, and are the oldest outside of Merifiana.

Constantly at war with most other Uranian races, through their cunning the Ogres have managed to form alliances with various other unwanted races, including Giants and Trolls. They keep a religion centered around a violent cult calling itself the “Order of the Red Star,” whose main purpose seems to be to wreak destruction wherever its followers can. While the cause of their malice towards “civilized” life remains unclear, none would deny the threat they pose: their Ogre Magi are notoriously powerful magicians and artificers who, some say, have stolen the secrets of the steam engine from the Gnomes.

Related: Merifiana § Religion and CultureBefore the ancient Human tribes of Urania adopted the Merifianan faith, they followed a religion headed by Druids. This religion had no documentation, so all of its “scriptures” were purely oral, passed down as lengthy sagas filled with heroes and demigods.
After the Commission of Lath 2,000 years ago, the Human nations began to adopt the Merifianan faith. However, the old Druidic sagas were not forgotten: they were instead incorporated into the new religion by turning the old heroes and demigods into “Saints.” These Saints grew so numerous, and varied so broadly from place to place, that the Edict of Grigny became necessary to reconcile the different religious traditions.
Branduin and Endora have the most Saints in their religion, and often confer the title “Saint” on various Merifianan religious figures, including Lath himself.

Born from the illegitimate union of King Adargin and his servant Dineh, Samar ascended to power after Adargin died without legitimate sons. The Merifianan city of Samarita is named for him.
Related: History § MerifianaThe war that separated the nations of Nemnebliar and Merifiana, fought approximately 2,100 years ago when the Merifianan king Samar exiled the heretic Turen. The Merifianan faith is founded on the ability of Changelings to “transubstantiate” themselves into nonliving substances: a Merifianan has the ability to turn into stone, wood, or other such things. Turen, on the other hand, found out (through a demonic pact, some say) how to use this power to “transfigure” himself into the likenesses of other living beings. As Merifianan holy scriptures associate this power with Werewolves and other evil creatures, Turen’s discovery was swiftly labeled a heresy against the Merifianan faith.
But Turen taught his newfound powers to many followers, who in turn taught others; very soon, an entire population of the Changelings were now able to transfigure themselves. Denounced by the church and exiled by Samar, Turen and his followers fled from the Merifianan capital of Rapturus, regrouping in the highlands of Solaraia before heading further south into the Suren Plains, hoping to establish a nation of their own. Samar, meanwhile, was swift to marshal his armies hunt down Turen and his heretics, who narrowly escaped his forces by transfiguring themselves into packs of wolves.
By the time Turen’s followers had entrenched themselves in the south, a full scale war was on their hands. Two years into the war, Turen would be slain by the Merifianan paladin Tacis; Turen’s wife Nemnes would later take the reigns of her country’s power, guiding it successfully to autonomy. The country “Nemnebliar” is named in Nemnes’ honor, and Nemnebliar and Merifiana have been enemies ever since.

Modern-day Merifianan priests emulate many of the water elemental powers attributed to Seplican, such as the power to walk on water, part it, or even summon it. Seplican’s remains are kept in a monastery located in the craggy foothills near the Merifianan city of Samarita. In iconography, he is always portrayed holding a staff and goblet, the two symbols of a Merifianan priest’s power.

Related: GeographyHome of the Tritonian “Elves,” Tritonia is the coldest of the Four Planets, regarded as the birthplace of civilization. Its large continents (Impera, Levisa, and Nova) are mountainous, mostly deforested, and covered with the marble ruins of the ancient Tritonian Empire, now a ghost of its former self.
Like Uranian Elves, the Tritonians have pointed ears, long lifspans, and are often nicknamed “Grey Elves” on account of their pale, slightly dusky complexion. It is clear from all accounts that their race has long been in decline; most of their cities are now populated by Uranian Humans originally imported as servants to the Tritonian aristocracy, and now outnumber their masters by as many as a hundred to one.
However, despite its current state, Tritonia is called “the First Planet” because its Empire was the first to develop magic in the form of alchemy. It was through alchemy that the Tritonians built arci, making travel between their major cities instantaneous. This innovation increased the mobility of the Empire’s armies, allowing it to conquer most of Impera and Nova. Eventually, one of these arci led not to another place on Tritonia, but to another Planet altogether—-Urania.
This discovery happened during the height of Tritonia’s Empire, 2,000 years ago, when its disparate tribes were mostly united under one crown. In short order, the technologically superior Tritonians asserted their power over the Uranian Human nations, claiming each as a province. Indeed, for 200 years the influx of lumber—-a valuable commodity in Tritonia’s steppes and treeless mountains—-and Human slaves helped the Tritonians almost realize their dream of a government uniting both their world and Urania. But that aspiration proved short-lived.
Led by Branduin, aided by the Gnomish discovery of modern magic, the Human nations revolted; only Endora, first to be subjugated by the Tritonians, fought on the Grey Elves’ behalf. But when Branduin invaded Endora’s capital of Endrasa, the Uranian Human armies funneled through the first arcus the Tritonians had built–an arcus which, tragically, led right into the heart of Morisus, the Tritonian capital.
Fearing the loss of the remainder of their race, the Tritonians surrendered, granting autonomy back to the Uranian Humans. The Tritonians have been unable to recover from this war ever since. Depopulated, depleted of resources, debilitated by plagues, the old Tritonian Empire has slowly crumbled over the course of 18 centuries, its power preserved only by the continued allegiance of Endora.
But Tritonia’s legacy lives on: the influence of its language and architecture can be seen all over Urania, and its arci still stand, connecting Urania’s cities to other worlds and to each other. Partnering with its old ally Endora, Tritonia commissioned research for arci to new planets, leading to the discovery of Draconia and Eliptia. It also still houses the Academy of Morisus, which still remains the oldest university devoted solely to the study of magic.
A Merifianan heretic known for to have discovered the forbidden power of transfiguration. The Merifianan priest Seplican caught Turen attempting to use his newfound powers, immediately reporting the heresy to the Pontificate. Turen was then exiled, along with his followers, by King Samar, and along with his wife Nemnes is regarded as the founder of the Nemnebliari race. The Nemnebliari city of Turentelin, located near the center of Forimlesse, is named for him.
Turen led his cult south to the Suren plains to escape Samar’s forces, and was only able to do so by having all of his followers transfigure themselves into wolves. The Schismatic War, in which Samar’s armies attempted to squelch the heretics, took place shortly thereafter. Curiously, Turen was capable of maintaining his priestly powers even after he had renounced his faith; however, even these powers were not enough to save him. He was slain by the Merifianan paladin Tacis; Turen’s wife Nemnes would thereafter take the throne.
In Nebulesse, Nemnebliar’s capital city, Nemnes commissioned a cathedral in honor of her husband; its main stained glass window portrays his death at Tacis’ hands. The Nemnebliari consider him a martyr to their faith.
The most diverse of the Four Worlds, the planet Urania hosts more races than any of the other three. These races include the Uranian Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, Humans, Changelings, and Ogres. It has three major continents: Herislolom and Forimlesse in its northern hemisphere, and Tressendel in its southern. It is home to the countries of Merifiana, Nemnebliar, the Island States, Branduin, Endora, Durundaro, Tundrad, Umbermoor, the Gnome Lands, and the Dwarven City States. Urania is sometimes referred to as the “Second Planet,” thanks to the fact that it was first to be linked to the planet Tritonia via arcus (i. e., a magical gate through which interplanetary commerce is possible).

It is said that he is not only the inventor of the limerick, but also was the originator of the wine-bottle-inside-of-the-spinning-speckled-egg trick, on which entire treatises have been written by the professors at his Academy. Despite malicious rumors to the contrary, he knew no magic whatsoever, and all of his tricks were “genuine” performances of prestidigitation, acrobatics, and plain old-fashioned silliness.
Ancient accounts claim that to see Vurnad in the springtime was to see all the beauty that the eye could see: supposedly founded by Druids in a valley of tulips, Vurnad overlooks the Bay of Jorn south of Durundaro, and was supposedly that nation’s southernmost city.
However, when the ancient Forest of Umber began dying around it, the city’s livelihood began to decline. The trees in Vurnad were blighted, rotting away, incapable of use for any form of construction: without ships to flee, the Human city proved easy prey to the Ogres that emerged from the forest shortly afterwards. The city has been an Ogre stronghold ever since, the main point from which the Ogres launch their naval attacks along the southern coast of Durundaro.
Recently, Durundaro launched a campaign attempting to liberate Vurnad from its centuries’ imprisonment under the Ogres, with the help of Barthelian troops led by General Bruno Cavaldy. While a small fortress was taken just west of the city, the campaign to liberate Vurnad ultimately proved a stalemate.

Those siding with the Gnomish Origin Theory of the Yo-Yo agree that the invention does feature many aspects specifically of Gnomish design: the roundness of the spools coupled with the distribution of weight so as to facilitate centrifugal force certain lend the yo-yo to Gnomish engineering. However, several notable Dwarven children’s stories feature heroes performing various exploits involving round stones tied to strings.
It is perhaps in the spirit of this debate that the Worldwide Yo-Yo Championship has been historically won either by Gnomes or Dwarves, and has acquired an enthusiastic following from one end of Urania to the other, its results often hotly contested. It was about nineteen years ago, in fact, when, at the age of nine, one young master Bruno Cavaldy became the first Human ever to win the Worldwide Yo-Yo Championship, a talent at which he still practices to this day.
