Though modern magic was developed by the Gnomes, numerous forms of it have been practiced throughout history. Modern “academic” mages group all forms of magic into four varieties: divine, natural, arcane, and infernal.
Divine magic is thought of as the kind of magic practiced by priests and paladins; it is said to derive from the powers of gods, conferred upon or “borrowed” by mortals. Natural magic is identified with the Uranian Elves, Druids, and Ogres, thought to be conjured from the forces of the natural, physical world. Arcane magic is associated with the modern academic mages, whose powers derive from complex formulæ, incantations, alchemy, and abstract knowledge of the Elements. Infernal magic is considered a perverse form of divine magic employing evil gods, demons, or devils; it also is associated with curses and necromancy, and its practice is strictly forbidden.
